Skeabost House Hotel Skye Wedding
///burns.darling.bookmark
Rain, sunshine, more rain, a cracking couple and a party in Portree. Just another October wedding on Skye then!
Yesterday I was back on the Isle of Skye for Karen and Ross’s wedding at Skeabost House Hotel, and as you can probably imagine, the Scottish weather decided to do its own thing.
The rain came. The rain went. The rain came back again. Then it buggered off for a bit before probably changing its mind again.
It’s October on Skye. What exactly were we expecting? Four solid hours of sunshine and blue skies? Aye, right!
But here’s the thing. The weather doesn’t make or break your wedding day. The people you’re sharing it with, the memories you make and the fact you’re actually getting married to the person you love are what matter.
And Karen and Ross absolutely smashed it.
A proper Skye wedding at Skeabost House Hotel
Karen and Ross spent the day celebrating with their family and friends at Skeabost House Hotel before heading to the Gathering Hall in Portree to carry on the celebrations.
And when I say carry on, I mean carry on!
This is the stuff I love about wedding photography. Not the perfectly choreographed moments or spending half the day arranging people into increasingly complicated poses. It’s the people, the laughs, the emotion, the unexpected moments and all the things that happen when everyone relaxes and gets on with enjoying themselves.
My approach has always been pretty simple. Observation, not orchestration. I’m there to photograph your wedding, not take over it.
Of course, I’ll give you a bit of direction when it’s needed, and we’ll get some cracking photographs of the two of you together. But I’m not going to spend your wedding day dragging you away from your guests every five minutes because I’ve decided I need another photograph of you looking lovingly into each other’s eyes.
You can leave that nonsense at the door.
I’d much rather you spent your wedding day actually enjoying yourselves, spending time with your favourite people and making memories. I’ll be keeping an eye on what’s happening and capturing it as it unfolds.
That’s the stuff you’ll look back on in years to come.
Getting married on Skye? Let’s talk about the weather.
One of the questions I reckon couples planning an Isle of Skye wedding worry about most is the weather.
And fair enough. You’re planning a wedding in one of the most beautiful places in Scotland, and naturally, you’d love a bit of sunshine to show it off.
But Skye is Skye. The weather can change quicker than you can say, “I thought the forecast said it was going to be dry!”
If you’re planning an October wedding, a winter wedding or even a summer wedding on the island, there’s never a guarantee of sunshine. You might get glorious light, dramatic clouds, sideways rain or a combination of all three before you’ve finished your morning coffee.
My advice? Don’t let it consume you.
A good wedding photographer should know how to work with the conditions, find the light, adapt when plans change and make the most of what’s happening rather than constantly wishing the weather was different.
Sometimes the rain becomes part of the story. Sometimes the clouds give you beautiful light. And sometimes you just have to get on with it, have a laugh and accept that you’re getting married in Scotland.
Bring a decent coat, have a sensible wet-weather option and don’t spend your wedding day staring at a weather app.
You’ve got better things to do.

And to anyone reading this who’s planning a wedding on Skye, whether that’s next year or a few years down the line, here’s my final bit of advice.
Don’t spend months worrying about whether everything will be perfect. It won’t be. Something will run late, the weather will probably do something unexpected, and somebody will inevitably have a few too many at the reception.
That’s life. That’s weddings. And quite often, that’s where the best stories come from.
Get married to your favourite person, surround yourself with people you love and enjoy the bloody day. I’ll take care of the photographs.
